Oralyzer - Beyond X-Rays: How We Track Root Canal Healing
At Integrative Endodontics, we use the Oralyzer to evaluate the inflammatory status of individual teeth—This advanced system allows us to gently sample the sulcular fluid (the natural fluid that surrounds each tooth below the gumline) and assess whether there are signs of elevated inflammation. It’s especially valuable for monitoring teeth that have had root canal treatment, as traditional diagnostics like X-rays and CBCT scans provide only a structural view. With the Oralyzer, we can test the biochemical health of each tooth, adding a vital layer of insight—without additional radiation.
The Oralyzer uses immunological biomarker detection to measure the presence of matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8), an enzyme strongly associated with active tissue breakdown and inflammation in the mouth. Using a rapid chairside test strip, the sampled fluid is analyzed in real time. This allows us to detect early signs of periodontal or periapical inflammation—even when no clinical symptoms or radiographic signs are present. It’s a simple, precise, and non-invasive tool that deepens our diagnostic capabilities and helps us monitor teeth that have had previous dental work.
We recommend Oralyzer testing at every recall visit for patients with a history of endodontic treatment. Whether it’s been six months or several years since your procedure, this test helps us monitor the long-term health of your teeth—safely and proactively. As part of our commitment to integrative, biologically informed care, Oralyzer testing allows us to better understand your individual healing response and tailor your ongoing support accordingly.
